# Workbook Diagnostics

Workbook Diagnostics give you insights into your workbook’s performance and dependencies. This feature is for advanced users to identify expensive calculations in their workbook that may be contributing to why a workbook is slower than expected.

Access Diagnostics via **Help** in the header.

Within the Diagnostics panel, the **Calculation** tab surfaces any elements that took more than 100 ms to process in your last workbook action.

Click any element to navigate directly to that location in the workbook. Here is a breakdown of the element types in Diagnostics:

- **Range**: Evaluation of a function or group of functions in the sheet
- **Computed column**: Evaluation of a computed column on a data table
- **Table/Table finalization**: Data table operations that prepare your data for viewing. Examples are Pivot table updates, connected table queries, and sort/filter.
- **Chart**: Rendering data for a chart
- **Conditional format**: Evaluation of a conditional format, such as unique/duplicate, heatmap, or custom function.

Click on the **Dependencies** tab to see the downstream dependencies and upstream dependencies for a given cell or range. First select your source to trace. To see dependencies for a pivot table or connected table, click on the top-left cell of the table.

You can set the maximum number of steps to trace as 5, 10, or unbounded. Steps represent the number of steps this element is either upstream or downstream of the target element. For example, if A1 contains =A2+1, A2 is one _step_ away from A1.

Click **Trace** to surface the up and downstream dependencies for the selected range.

Here again, you can click any of the elements to navigate directly to that location in the workbook. Note, if multiple table items have the same step, it means they are all the same number of steps away from the target.

In addition to accessing via **Help**, you can also open Diagnostics from the progress counter in the bottom right of the workbook by clicking on it while it's showing your progress.
